Building a Progressive Democratic Majority From the Grassroots Up

Russ Feingold

Office Seeking: U.S. Senate, WI

Position Held: Senator, Incumbent

Primary Election Date: September 14

Progressive Credentials:

  • Demanded Campaign Finance Reform through the McCain/Feingold Act
  • Spoke out against NAFTA and other free trade agreements
  • Supported robust single-payer health care reform

Why We Like Him: Russ Feingold has a long history of being a reliable Progressive. His public statements as a politician closely mirror his private conduct. His integrity as a steward of the people's trust is unquestioned. Senator Feingold has proven that it is possible to reach across the aisle in drafting legislation without sacrificing a solidly Progressive agenda in the process.

Candidate Quote: "Over the last year, a common theme I have been hearing from Wisconsinites at my listening sessions is frustration with the growing government bureaucracy ... Unnecessary bureaucratic positions not only waste taxpayer dollars, but also make government less effective and less responsive to the people it represents."

Feingold attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors. He went to Magdalen College at the University of Oxford on a Rhodes Scholarship in 1977, where he earned another Bachelor of Arts degree. Upon returning to the U.S., he attended Harvard Law School, receiving his J.D. with honors.

In 1982, he was elected to the Wisconsin Senate, where he served for ten years until his election to the United States Senate. In 1987, he joined the "Bowtie Brigade," a coalition of grassroots activists and local-level politicians who backed the presidential candidacy of bowtie-clad Senator Paul Simon of Illinois.
