Office Seeking: Secretary of State - SD
Won Primary
Why We Like Him:
Candidate Quote: “Clean, transparent and fair elections are essential to any democracy. In South Dakota, we can do better to provide equal access to the ballot for all of our citizens, especially our Native American citizens. As Secretary of State I will ensure that every South Dakotan who has the right to vote and the desire to vote will have the opportunity to vote.”

Ben was raised in a family that values public service. He started working at an early age to help make the lives of the less fortunate better. At 20, he spent 6 months working at an orphanage in the jungles of Guatemala from which his family has adopted two children. At 23, he spent his summer driving across the country while organizing a 3,000 mile bicycle ride that raised money and awareness for a prison ministry organization.
Ben is serving his third term in the South Dakota State Senate, representing Clay and Turner counties.
He has been in the state legislature since 2000, serving two terms in the House of Representatives before moving to the Senate. Ben serves in leadership as the Democrat Caucus Chairman. Over his five terms, he has served on the Health and Human Services, Commerce, Taxation, Education and State Affairs committees.
During his time in the legislature, Ben has fought for better education funding for South Dakota schools, on behalf of their small towns and farmers, and for limiting the government’s intrusion into citizens’ lives.
